Stays on historical forts in the Sahyadri

Sahyadri forts, are a flashback into times when brave warriors, kings and princes reigned. Many well preserved forts in this region stand testimony to those times and are in good enough condition to provide a really imaginitive experience as we walk the routes those historical feet touched, see temples and fortifications of majesty.
Stays on forts are the perfect way of spending some time cocooned in history; away from the bustle of our daily lives and in close contact with nature. On forts of this region, you can't miss the feeling of awe for the Marathas and Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj in particular. Interactions with local Indian tribes are an unending source of vivid entertainment and refreshingly different cultures and people.

Western Ghats of India
Hiking in the Sahyadri is invariably related with forts in this magnificent range, also known as the Western Ghats. The very nature of the range makes it ideal for forts with hills that rise like blocks from the land around them. Over the centuries, these natural fortifications were further strengthened and rendered impassable except from entry gates to make the region more defensible.

Cave Exploring, ancient water tanks still in use, massive stone gateways with giant steps that make you wonder about the height of the ancient Maratha warriors, fortifications and sheer cliffs standing strong and unconquerable through time...... and of course, the endless folklore of the great warriors like Shivaji Maharaj that ruled the land passed from generation to generation through folk music and stories that still have the power to rule a camp fire evening.
Forts we enjoy staying on include Rajmachi, Lohagad, Gorakh-Macchindra, Harishchandragad, Bhimashankar, Karnala and Naneghat. For more information about these locations, follow the links or head over to the Sahyadri information and experiences section of our library.
