himalaya There is much to see for visitors to Kullu Valley of India. Hikers, mountaineers and trekkers will be just as busy as tourists, artists and natives who leave behind the heat and dust of the valleys and plains below and enjoy the Himalayan air and environment. Kullu is famous for its scenic wonders and for its many handmade goods, including shawls and “kullu caps”.

Most visitors will come during the months of March through June to take advantage of the comfortable temperatures and the great trekking, hiking, climbing and even river rafting opportunities.

Some of the things to see in the Kullu Valley include the Bijli Mahadev Shrine, which rewards hikers of this moderately tough climb with one of the most beautiful temples and panoramic views in the entire region. Called the “temple of lightning” the site offers a single remaining sixty foot column of white stone.

The pastoral beauty of the Katrain area offers guests great fishing, well rated accommodations and many local farms who sell their homegrown goods to travelers. Some excellent opportunities for savings on accommodations for this area can be found at HotelsCombined.com.

At Manikaran there are world famous hot springs open to the public year round. Thousands of people take a holy pilgrimage to the waters, but a word of caution about the water temperatures – they can reach temperatures adequate for cooking rice and vegetables, so everyone should test the waters before plunging in! There are also legendary temples around this same area.

Finally all visitors should make a point of stopping by Naggar, which sits on the banks of the Beas River. It was here that the capital of Kulu state sat for over 1,400 years. The town is full of historic temples and structures. There is Naggar castle, and a few world famous art galleries. The town is also the starting point for many treks and is the base camp for those beginning a journey to Chanderkhani Pass or the remote Malana valley.

Kullu has not yet gained the fame of other regions of India, but its genuinely friendly inhabitants, mild weather, fantastic trekking and hiking opportunities, lush valleys, excellent food and large variety of relevant and beautiful historic sites make it a location that will soon enjoy a great deal of tourist attention.
