Essential qualities to be a good facilitator

There are as many approaches to enhancing learning as there are facilitators. Every one has his own style and for every effective facilitator there are hundreds that just aren't.

 Effective facilitators often:

  • Make sure that participants understand what the programme is about.
  • Establish a clear purpose for the programme.
  • Motivate participation
  • Encourage participants share experiences and opinions.
  • Are genuinely interested in the outcomes and learnings from the activities
  • Stay quiet when discussions get active.
  • Speak to trigger ideas rather than teach.
  • Keep discussions on track
  • Ensure that all voices are heard
  • Help break up big generalized issues into smaller specific events
  • Maintain objectivity
  • Contribute observations rather than solutions
  • Identify processes leading to satisfying solutions
  • Generate strategies for approaching future problems
  • Create powerful anchors for applying learnings in future approaches
